Environmental Modeling, Measurement and Analysis

Wyle provides research, measurement, modeling and analysis expertise in virtually every area related to the environmental effects of transportation systems.  Our experienced professional staff of scientists, engineers, and analysts possess a wide range of technical specialties in transportation environmental monitoring, modeling, and analysis and are experts in the assessment of aviation systems and NextGen requirements.

Environmental Modeling, Measurement & AnalysisWe continue to play key roles in various national and international forums and organizations, including the FAA Center of Excellence for Aircraft Noise and Aviation Emissions Mitigation (PARTNER), the NextGen Institute, the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), as well as several Transportation Research Board (TRB) technical committees.

Wyle has led the industry with the development of various environmental models including key noise and sonic boom models for aircraft and aerospace systems, such as:

  • The FAA’s Aviation Environmental Design Tool (AEDT) for both local and system-wide modeling of the environmental  effects of aviation operations;

  • NASA’s Rotorcraft Noise Model (RNM) for advanced noise modeling of helicopter and tiltrotor operations;

  • The NPS’ Noise Model Simulation (NMSim) for noise simulation of air tour operations over national parks;

  • NASA’s PCBoom for the modeling of sonic boom impacts from supersonic aircraft and space vehicle operations;

  • The DOD Advanced Acoustic Model (AAM) for the advanced simulation of acoustic effects and propagation of military vehicles.

We are experts in all the major environmental models (e.g., INM, TNM, EDMS, AEDT, AERMOD, CALPUFF, MOVES, etc.) and possess advanced expertise in the assessment of tradeoffs and interdependencies between noise, emissions, fuel burn, system capacity, and operational efficiency. We have produced key studies in this area including in support of NextGen development and the optimization of terminal departure procedures.

Furthermore, Wyle has extensive experience conducting radar data reduction and analysis for both local and system-wide airspace operations. We have conducted scores of statistical analyses of aviation / airport traffic data as well as the assessment and optimization of flight trajectories. We have also developed key tools and databases for the FAA, which provide extensive analysis of fleet, route, and operational alternatives. We have used these advanced tools to conduct expert analyses in support of both NextGen modeling efforts as well as international policy efforts for ICAO’s Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection.
