St. Petersburg Clearwater International Airport

Noise Study for St. Petersburg/Clearwater International Airport

In response to Community concerns about aircraft noise impacts, the St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport (PIE), under a contract issued and administered by Pinellas County, retained Wyle to conduct a multi-phased Noise Study that would support the goal of the PIE Noise Abatement Task Force to better understand typical community sound levels and the impact of aircraft noise.

The purpose of the PIE study is to identify current and future aircraft-generated noise levels in the vicinity of the airport and to quantify any significant changes in noise exposure that may result from any recommended modifications to arrival and departure flight procedures from a separate airspace study conducted another consultant. The Study included a noise measurement program, a noise modeling program to evaluate the baseline and a future year noise environment, analysis to identify and communicate any significant change in noise exposure (benefits and adverse impacts) that would result if any new departure and arrival procedures, and presentation of results at a public meeting.

The Study is divided into two phases. Phase I examines the 2004 "base year" noise exposure and Phase II will examine the noise exposure projected for 2008. The year 2004 was used as the base year, because commercial operations and passenger traffic peaked at their historical high and dropped off considerably early in 2005. The year 2008 is the future year selected to project the noise environment with and without implementation of any recommended modifications to arrival and departure flight procedures from a separate airspace study conducted by Jeppesen.
