Noise Analysis for San Diego International Airport Site Selection Program

County of San Diego, CA

Wyle was selected as part of a team to perform an Alternatives Analysis of six potential airport sites throughout San Diego County. Scenarios involved full-replacement and/or supplemental sites (i.e., joint civilian and military use) of San Diego International Airport (SAN) involving three existing Navy/Marine Corps installations and two undeveloped locations. Wyle developed all input for the FAA’s Integrated Noise Model (INM) Version 6.1c and the Department of Defense’s NOISEMAP Version 7.2 computer programs and performed all of the aircraft noise modeling. In addition to Community Noise Equivalent Level (CNEL), supplemental metrics were computed and included Sound Exposure Level (SEL) contours, and daytime and nighttime Equivalent Sound Level (Leq) contours and innovative flight frequency maps. CNEL and Maximum Sound Level (Lmax) were computed for noise-sensitive receptors. Difference contours of 1.5 and 3.0 dB CNEL were generated. Wyle provided expert third-party review of ambient noise measurements conducted in the vicinity of each airport site. Videos of noise exposure from typical aircraft types were created using Wyle’s proprietary NoiseMap Simulation (NMSim) software.
