Master Plan Update & Part 150 Noise Compatibility Study

Wyle provided noise analysis services to support the Martin County Airport/Witham Field Master Plan Update. Wyle engineers monitored noise at twelve locations in the communities adjacent to the airport to help define the current DNL and single event levels (SEL and Lmax) for individual flight operations. Wyle then collected flight operations data, including flight track definitions, and developed a noise model for the baseline year (1999) and three future year scenarios, using the FAA’s Integrated Nosie Model (INM). The baseline year noise model was validated through comparison with the field measurements. For each operation scenario, the reported noise impact - within the 65-DNL contour - included the off-airport contour area, population, and housing. Throughout the study, Wyle participated in a series of airport planning and public meetings to report progress and results. The County Board of Supervisors requested supplemental analysis to show noise impacts outside the traditional DNL contours and were very pleased with the results. Supplemental analysis studies included:

  • Time Above 65 dB in contour levels of 10, 20 and 30 minutes per day.
  • Number of events above 65 dB occuring in the airport vicinity (see graphic above).
  • Leq contour maps (average sound level over a specified period of time), used to analyze noise levels during peak periods of the day or night.
  • Leq contour maps for peak operations periods during the year (busy weekend, etc.).
