Systems Engineering and Integration

In support of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Weather Service (NWS), the Radar Operations Center (ROC) operates a network of 160 Doppler weather radars located across the U.S., Puerto Rico, Guam, Azores, Japan and Korea.  This radar installation network provides data for one of NOAA’s primary missions: providing early warning, tracking, and assessment of tornadoes, major storms, and other potentially destructive weather-related activities. Wyle Information Systems has supported the ROC for nine years, maintaining the Weather Surveillance Radar - 1988 Doppler (WSR-88D) software baseline, which includes online applications, offline support systems, and operating and maintenance manuals.

The Doppler Next Generation Weather Radar (NEXRAD) is a key component of the $4.5 billion NWS modernization program. Wyle staff provide a wide range of engineering and technical support to the ROC including all phases of software engineering, radar engineering, systems engineering, software development, office automation, microcomputer, integrated logistics, configuration management (CM), electronics maintenance, test bed operations, meteorological hotline support, and program management. Wyle professionals bring the optimal combination of best-of-breed Federal and industry engineering lifecycle support and provide real-time radar engineering services.

Experts are deployed to radar locations worldwide to install upgrades and resolve issues. Wyle Information Systems has supported several important short term projects such as relocation of the Jackson, Miss. and Camp Humphreys, Republic of South South Korea NEXRAD radar systems; construction of the Pedestal Test Facility; design, development, fabrication, and installation of the K2 switch allowing the KCRI and KJIM Radar Data Acquisition shelters to share a single antenna pedestal; design of the DAU Opto-Isolator assembly; Emergency repair of the Reno NEXRAD; and other projects.

Providing a wide range of systems and radar engineering support to the ROC, Wyle Information Systems performed radar interference studies, deployed TDWR SPG equipment, assisted in development of required Information Systems Security plans, procedures, and testing.  In the nearly nine years of supporting ROC, Wyle professionals have worked on all major system upgrade projects including Open Radar Product Generation (ORPG), Open Radar Data Acquisition (ORDA), Open Principal User Processor (OPUP), and Radar Product Generator (RPG) Refresh and other projects.
