Wyle's Epidemiology Section conducts studies in collaboration with NASA's Space Medicine Program to enhance the practice of evidence-based medicine. The Longitudinal Study of Astronaut Health examines the mortality and morbidity rates of astronauts in comparison to the general population. It also determines the rate of illness and accidents that require medical care and/or the use of medical equipment and supplies during space travel. Wyle personnel have established a comprehensive database that facilitates investigations of health issues related to specific occupational exposures and working populations.
Another database, the Comprehensive Medical Information System, is being developed by
Wyle to integrate data from all areas of the Space Medicine Program. Upon completion of this system, NASA flight surgeons will have access to medical data from the electronic medical record, mission records, and clinical and environmental laboratory databases. Such access is controlled through multiple levels of security in accordance with privacy requirements.
