Astronaut Strength Conditioning and Rehabilitation - ASCR

The Astronaut Strength Conditioning and Rehabilitation Specialists or ASCRS provide a unique set of services to the astronaut community at Johnson Space Center. ASCRs physically train the astronaut for the many strenuous tasksks, the rigorous training schedule and the stress that space flight presents to the human body. They are responsible for pre-flight, in-flight training for both shuttle and space station crews. ASCRs are also consultants on the development of in-flight exercise hardware. One of the main priorities of the ASCR group is to eliminate or minimize the bone and muscle loss that occurs during long duration space flight.

As well as strength and conditioning specialists, the ASCR group employs certified and licensed athletic trainers. These athletic trainers treat and rehabilitate the musculoskeletal injury of the very active astronaut. Rehabilitation from the effects long duration space flight is also done in order to regain the loss of bone and muscle. The ASCR travels to Star City/Moscow Russia, Cape Canaveral, Florida and Edwards Air Force Base in California to provide the astronauts with any injury rehabilitation, massage, or post-flight rehabilitation needed.
